First Time Getting Lash Extensions

Getting lash extensions for the first time can feel overwhelming, and I completely understand the mix of excitement and nervousness. After welcoming thousands of first-time clients at Lash Affair since 2014, I've heard every question and concern imaginable. Here's everything I wish every new client knew before their first appointment.

What to Expect During Your First Appointment

A full set of lash extensions typically takes one-and-a-half to two hours for classic lashes and two to three hours for volume. You'll lie comfortably on a lash bed with your eyes closed the entire time. Most of my first-time clients are surprised by how relaxing the process is—many fall asleep. The application itself is painless. You'll feel light touches as each extension is placed, but there's no pulling, pinching, or discomfort when it's done correctly.

Before we start, I always conduct a consultation to understand the look you want, assess your natural lashes, and explain what's realistic for your lash type. This is your time to ask questions—there are no bad ones. The more you communicate, the happier you'll be with the result.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes. Remove all mascara, eyeliner, and eye makeup before your appointment—residue on your lashes prevents the adhesive from bonding properly. I also recommend avoiding caffeine right before your appointment if you tend to get jittery, since you'll need to keep your eyes closed and stay relatively still.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before the service and bring your glasses to wear home. Leave your phone in your bag—the two hours go by faster than you think, and it's a great opportunity to genuinely relax.

Classic vs. Volume: Which Is Right for You?

Classic lash extensions involve placing one extension on each natural lash. The result is a natural, mascara-like enhancement that's perfect for first-timers who want to enhance what they have without looking overly dramatic. Volume extensions use lightweight fans of multiple thin extensions per natural lash, creating a fuller, more glamorous look.

For most first-time clients, I recommend starting with classic extensions. They give you a beautiful introduction to lash extensions without the commitment of a dramatic look. You can always upgrade to volume at your next fill once you're comfortable with the maintenance routine and know what you like.

The First 24 Hours Matter

After your appointment, avoid getting your lashes wet for the first four to six hours while the adhesive fully cures. Skip steam, saunas, and intense workouts for the first 24 hours. After that initial period, daily cleansing is not just safe—it's essential. I send every first-time client home with aftercare instructions and recommend our lash-safe cleanser so they have everything they need from day one.

How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

A well-applied set of lash extensions lasts through your natural lash growth cycle—typically two to three weeks before a fill is needed. You won't wake up one morning with all your lashes gone. Instead, extensions shed gradually along with your natural lashes, which is completely normal. Fill appointments replace the extensions that have naturally shed and keep your set looking full.

I recommend booking your first fill two weeks after your initial set. This shorter interval lets me assess how your lashes responded, make any adjustments to length or style, and reinforce your aftercare habits while they're still new.

Will Extensions Damage My Natural Lashes?

When applied correctly by a trained professional, lash extensions do not damage your natural lashes. The key word is "correctly." Each extension should be isolated on a single natural lash, the weight should be appropriate for what the natural lash can support, and no extension should be glued to multiple natural lashes or to the skin.

This is why choosing a qualified lash artist matters. I've seen damage from untrained technicians who overloaded natural lashes with extensions that were too heavy or too long. At Lash Affair, natural lash health is our first priority—we'd rather give you a slightly more conservative set that keeps your natural lashes healthy than a dramatic set that causes damage.

What If I Don't Like Them?

Extensions can be professionally removed at any time using a specialized adhesive remover. The process is gentle and takes about 20 minutes. If you simply want a change, we can adjust length, curl, or style at your next fill. The beauty of extensions is that they're customizable and temporary—nothing is permanent, and you're always in control of the look.
