LAM Spotlight | Melissa Pinyon

LASH ARTIST of the MONTH

Every month Lash Affair by J. Paris holds a competition on Instagram where you can submit your best work using the hashtag #lashaffairLAM. The winner receives a gift card, shout out and a spotlight on our blog. Our winner in August was Melissa Pinyon, a lash artist in Tennesee. She shared with us some of the wisdom that she has gathered over her career in the beauty industry.

What is Your Story?

I live in Knoxville, Tennessee. I'm 31 years old and have been married for five years. I think I have the best 2 1/2-year-old toddler and two amazing stepchildren. I enjoy spending time with my family and watching Tennessee football in the fall. However, I don't have much time for hobbies because lashing takes up, what seems like, 90% of my time. Which is not a complaint, it's a very deserving compliment because I love my career!

What Got you into Lashing?

I started out doing hair about ten years ago. Worked at a salon for four years then decided to get into office management, still doing a select few family and friends on the side. After having my baby, I was in need of a pick me up. I had been wanting to get my lashes done for a while but never took the plunge. So when I finally did and opened my eyes that first time, I was hooked. I knew I had to get trained so I could spread this fantastic thing I had just discovered with my friends and family. So I signed up for a training class immediately, and 2 years later, here I am!

What was your biggest fear?

I had been out of the beauty industry for many years, and when I decided to take the leap and quit my salary job to do lashes full time, my biggest fear was failing. Failing to provide for my family. Failing to fulfill my client's expectations of amazing lashes. But I did not give up and will keep pushing myself to learn and grow till my eyes cant see those tiny lashes anymore! My passion for lashes has conquered my fears.

What has this industry done for you?

This industry has changed my life! It has made me realize I honestly have a purpose. I love how it has brought me so many new friendships and has built my confidence. I'm so grateful for this industry!

What is your favorite part of being a lash artist?

My favorite part of being a lash artist is that feeling you get when each client opens their eyes and looks into the mirror and hearing their reaction of pure amazement at the art you just created for them.  To me, being a lash artist is not a "job." A "job" has never been this rewarding.  I love it! Lashes are a way of life for me.

Do you have a preffered look you like?

Volume is my specialty, but I will never give up on the classic lash technique. I tend to lean towards the Russian Volume look with the perfect line, but I love to create unique looks catered to each client.

What Advice would you give a new lash artist?

I believe in this industry you have to tell yourself you are going to be successful and as long as you continue to do that and never stop taking education from other successful artists, you will succeed. Don't give up!
