Why You Should Add Colored Extensions to Your Business
Colored lash extensions were one of the most exciting additions to my service menu, and they've become a consistent revenue driver that I recommend every artist consider. When I first introduced them at Lash Affair, I wasn't sure how the demand would hold up beyond the initial novelty. Years later, colored extensions are one of our most requested services and one of our best-selling product categories.
Why Colored Extensions Are Worth Adding
Colored extensions give you a way to offer something genuinely different from every other lash artist in your area. In a market where most studios offer the same black classic and volume sets, color creates an immediate point of differentiation. Clients who might not have a strong reason to switch lash artists will seek you out specifically if you offer unique color options they can't get elsewhere.
From a business perspective, colored sets command a premium price. I charge more for colored and mixed-color sets because they require additional artistry, more inventory management, and specialized consultation. Clients understand and accept this because they're paying for a custom, creative service, not a standard application.
They're Not Just for Special Occasions
One of the biggest misconceptions about colored extensions is that they're only for Halloween or festivals. In reality, subtle color additions work beautifully for everyday wear. A few brown or dark burgundy extensions mixed into a black set add warmth and dimension that looks sophisticated, not costume-like. Navy blue lashes make brown eyes pop. Deep purple extensions add a subtle richness that clients love.
I educate my clients about the range of possibilities during consultation. Some want a full rainbow set for an event, and that's fantastic. But most of my colored extension clients are wearing three to five colored lashes per eye mixed into their regular set for a subtle enhancement that only they know about until someone looks closely. That "secret detail" aspect is what makes clients fall in love with color.
How to Introduce Color to Hesitant Clients
Many clients are intrigued by colored extensions but nervous about committing to a full colored set. I solve this by offering a "color accent" option, a few colored extensions placed strategically in the outer corners or bottom layer of the set. It's low-risk for the client and introduces them to color in a way that feels safe. More often than not, they come back asking for more color at their next fill.
Social media is your best marketing tool for colored extensions. Post close-up photos and videos showing the subtle shimmer of colored lashes in different lighting. When clients see how beautiful and wearable colored extensions look in real-world settings, the hesitation disappears.
Choosing the Right Color Inventory
You don't need every color in the rainbow to get started. Begin with versatile shades that complement a wide range of eye colors and skin tones: brown, dark purple, dark blue, and burgundy are my best sellers because they work on almost everyone and look natural enough for daily wear. As demand grows, expand into bolder shades like teal, green, pink, and mixed-color trays.
At Lash Affair, I developed our colored extension line with wearability in mind. Every shade is designed to complement natural eye colors rather than clash with them, because I know from experience that clients want color that enhances, not overwhelms.
Application Tips for Colored Extensions
Applying colored extensions uses the same technique as black extensions, since the adhesive, isolation, and placement methods don't change. The creative element is in the mapping: deciding where to place colors for maximum impact. I typically place the brightest colors in the outer third of the eye or along the bottom layer so they peek through the black extensions above.
For mixed-color sets, I recommend planning your color map before the client lies down. Sketch out which colors go where so you're not making design decisions mid-application. This keeps the set consistent and reduces your application time.
The Revenue Opportunity Is Real
Colored extensions have become a significant part of my revenue mix and one of the most shareable services on social media. Every colored set I post generates inquiries from new clients who want the same look. It's a self-marketing service, because the work literally advertises itself. If you're looking for a way to differentiate your business, attract new clients, and charge premium prices, colored extensions are one of the smartest additions you can make.
