Getting Certified in Eyelash Extensions
The How To | Become a Lash Artist
LOOK UP YOUR STATE’S REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSED LASH ARTISTS
If you’re going to do it, do it right (aka, legally, babe)! Getting certified will not give you freedom to legally be a lash artist and perform lash extension services in your area if a license is required in your state. All regulations vary state by state and country by country (some are very strict about what specific license you need, and some are more lax). Licenses are given under the authority of a governing body, like the State Board of Cosmetology and the most common licenses in the beauty industry are Cosmetology, Esthetics, Barbering, Massage Therapy and Nail Technician. You can easily get the rundown on your state’s requirements for eyelash extensions + licensure on their official government website.
CONSIDER YOUR PREFERRED LEARNING STYLE FOR CLASSIC LASH EXTENSION TRAINING
At Lash Affair Academy, we offer both online and in-person lash course options to become a certified lash artist. There’s pros and cons to both formats (think about the cost, time commitment, etc.), but it’s totally up to you to decide what you want your eyelash extension education to be. Whether you’re a hands-on learner and want to work directly with your educator, or if you want the time and flexibility to earn your lash extension certificate online, the choice is yours. Choose wisely, though, cuz your classic course is the foundation for a successful career.
CHOOSE YOUR SCHOOL FOR YOUR CLASSIC EYELASH EXTENSION CERTIFICATION
If you want to be the best, you’ve got to learn from the best. When you’re looking for the school/educator you want to learn the art of lash extensions with, be selective! There are hundreds of lash extension training options available to you, but it’s up to you to choose a school that will provide you with full support to start your career. You might know an individual near you who runs a successful lash biz of their own, but that doesn’t always mean they’re qualified to be the best trainer. We highly recommend trusting your education with a reputable, established academy with a team of educators and resources available to you. This is your LASHvestment, after all.
DO YA RESEARCH + ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR LASH COURSE
Each eyelash extension school offers a totally different experience for students - you’ll learn different methods, work with different products, and be given different amounts of support. At Lash Affair Academy, for example, we have a team of educators across the country with years of hands-on experience as lash artists + we provide our students with published manuals, product kits, and ongoing support after you’re certified. We also prioritize lash health - so we show our students the best techniques for maintaining the integrity of clients’ natural lashes. Your school’s education can vary, so it’s extra important for you to read about their curriculum + past student testimonials in order to fully understand what they’re offering. If you can’t find the answers on their website, reach out to them to inquire about the timeline of their lash extension courses (how many days will it take to get certified?), if they offer a manual, what products they use, etc. Always make sure you know exactly what you’re signing up for. You can read more about getting the most out of your lash course here.
STUDY UP, BABE! LEARNING TO LASH TAKES TIME + PRACTICE
Lashing ain’t easy! It requires an understanding of hair, anatomy, and technique + hands-on work to perfect your craft. Before your eyelash extension course starts, study as much as you can (from reliable sources) to get familiar with the concepts you’ll be learning in class. We also recommend watching YouTube videos of classic lash application + isolation to give you a better idea of what the motions look like.
